SAINT JOSEPH’S EAST GEORGIA SERVICES TRIPLE REGISTERED NURSES RECRUITED

ATLANTA – (February 26, 2009) – Saint Joseph’s East Georgia has seen its surgical cases triple since the hospital began expanding services including completion of a $1 million renovation and recruiting several critical care-experienced registered nurses.

“Staff have undergone advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and pediatric life support (PAL) training to better care for patients who may come here,” says Celia Covington, RN, director of nursing at Saint Joseph’s East Georgia.  “And, we’ve added five registered nurses who also have critical care experience or additional certification in their specialty -- all of which translates to higher quality care and services.”
Saint Joseph’s East Georgia offers outpatient services for general surgery, urology, orthopaedics, podiatry and gynecology procedures, as well as expanded outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation facilities.  Surgical cases have tripled since January, according to Covington.  In addition, staff are encouraged to pursue advanced programs in their areas of specialty and many have completed those certifications.

“Staff members are eager to learn and expand their capabilities,” says Covington.  “But, an additional benefit is that all of our staff are residents of the area so they are personally invested in Saint Joseph’s and their relationships in the community.  It’s a win-win situation for that personal connection between patients and care givers.”

A community philanthropy campaign is underway to raise $15 million to provide furnishings, equipment, and endow indigent care and clinical research programs within a new hospital that Saint Joseph’s, Atlanta plans to build in the Lake Oconee area.  Campaign volunteers are working in partnership with Saint Joseph’s, a non-profit hospital, to make the new Lake Oconee area hospital a reality.  Volunteers urge everyone to support the new hospital which will offer the latest diagnostic, surgical and outpatient services.  Pledges, which may be made over five years and are tax-deductible, can be made by calling Saint Joseph’s Mercy Foundation at 678-843-5716.
